Chapter twelve.

But you must know where he went,’ Simon was frustrated. Sylva’s pony, her beloved Spotlight,

whom she had persuaded him to buy for her when they saw him in dire condition at the sales.

She had nursed him back to health, and focussed all her love on him when their father walked out, he couldn’t be gone out of reach. Spotlight had been his rather strange twin’s main hold on life after that desertion and their actress mother’s scant attention. He had been another part of it before that misguided business with Drake had made her cut him out. Marg, to whom he was talking, looked defensive.

‘I didn’t want to have the pony put down,’ she said. ‘I know how fond of him Sylva was, there was something special between the two of them. One of my clients had sent her lame pony to a small sanctuary, they just asked for a donation. She said it looked alright on a video, man had donkeys as well. I thought at least Sylva could be honestly told Spotlight hadn’t been a put down and your mother agreed to it.’

“She would,” thought Simon. He knew that their mother could no longer face what had happened to her daughter. She had escaped from it back to her long-standing job as a character in a well-known tv soap and an apparently humane way to solve the pony problem would have been more than welcome.

‘Where is this sanctuary?’ he asked Marg, and she found the address for him. It was in West Wales, an area he didn’t know, but he decided to visit it. He could at least make sure that Sylvia’s pony was alright. It was Saturday next day, he would go then.

The journey proved to be to a dead end. When Simon, who had not driven so far since passing his test, finally reached the destination that Marg had given him he found a derelict farm. It was a jungle of nettles and brambles growing over collapsed buildings and walls and when he enquired at the nearest pub he was told that it had been deserted for years and that there was a doubt over who owned the property. With a horrible sinking feeling Simon knew that Marg had been conned and that Sylva’s pony was almost certainly dead.
